Top Hardscape and Landscape Maintenance Tips for Fall: How to Prepare Your Yard

The change in season in Pennsylvania brings a need to ensure your home is ready for colder weather. Fall is the perfect time to enjoy your landscaping and hardscaping, but it’s also a good time to start thinking ahead for the upcoming colder months. We’ve put together a list of tips to help you maintain your outdoor oasis this fall.

Hardscaping Maintenance:

Hardscaping is a low maintenance way to make your outdoor oasis beautiful and functional. While these elements are low maintenance and built to withstand all weather, it is still important to perform regular maintenance to ensure these features stay in top-shape for the long run. So, what should you do to keep your hardscape looking good as new? Here are a few simple maintenance tips for the fall months that can ensure your outdoors are prepared for the winter.

Clean Your Hardscaping:

Routinely cleaning your hardscaping can keep your outside area in the best shape possible. Start by sweeping debris off the hardscaped areas. Then follow up by washing these areas using soap and water. We recommend cleaning up spills or stains as soon as they happen to keep regular upkeep to a minimum. If you’re experiencing stains or discoloration, we recommend power washing.  If you don’t have experience with power washing, we recommend hiring a professional to complete this job. It’s very important that you don’t damage your hardscaping trying to do it yourself. Give us a call, we can help!

Weed Prevention & Removal:

It is completely normal for weeds to grow through the crack in your walkways, patios, and other areas throughout your yard. Keeping up with weed removal will help keep these features clean and prevent damage. Simply remove the weeds from the cracks and spray herbicide if needed to prevent further growth.

Regular Inspections:

Don’t forget about your home’s exterior. Many of your home’s issues, including water and structural damage, start outside of the home. This is why it’s so important to check your hardscaping for water accumulation, cracks in retaining walls, and other signs of damage. If something looks off, call us right away. We will come out, find the issue, and address it immediately. This will help you keep your home and family safe from any future issues.

Resealing Your Hardscaping:

The wear and tear from harsh Pennsylvania weather can deteriorate your pavers over time. Applying sealant can help prevent damage and keep them in top-shape. If you recently had your hardscaping installed, you can skip this step for now as your pavers will be sealed upon the completion of your project. We recommend sealing your pavers every 3 – 5 years to avoid over sealing. This process is best for warmer temperatures, so be sure to do this before getting too far into the fall season.

Another important factor to keep in mind while heading into the winter months is which snow and ice treatment you’re using on your hardscaping. We recommend using a snow blower or plastic shovels that won’t scratch or damage your hardscaping. Make sure to remove the snow appropriately and only use deicing products when there is ice to be removed. Try to avoid over treating your hardscaped areas.
